ST. LOUIS – While Spring Break starts for most of the SIUC campus at some point on Friday, my “vacation” began some time after I finished my recap of the SIU softball team’s clean sweep of SEMO.
After a night of finishing homework, packing and a four-hour nap, I woke up early, had breakfast at Corner Diner (where I spotted SIU golf coach Leroy Newton, by the way) and then went on my merry way to St. Louis where I would eventually find parking ($1 per hour) and take part of some of the pre-tournament media festivities.
Festivities that allowed me to take a peek at SIU’s brief practice session and chat with head coach Chris Lowery and some of the Saluki players.
Here is what some of them had to say about their time in the Gateway City, so far.
KEVIN DILLARD on the expected fan support from Saluki Nation: "Everywhere we go our fans travel with us. And as long as we come in and take care of business, we’ll be all right."
DILLARD on his first March Madness experience: "In high school you always watch on TV, but now you actually get a part of it. It’s exciting for me."
BRYAN MULLINS on the most talked about right foot in the history of SIU sports (with all due respect to former Saluki kicker Craig Coffin): “It’s OK. It’s a little sore, we’ll see. We’re going to do another practice after this, do some stuff and see how it feels then probably decide tonight or tomorrow morning."
MULLINS on tournament play: "I always think the first game of the tournament is the toughest, so we have to get past that. We can’t worry about winning the tournament right now; we’ve just got to beat Bradley."
ANTHONY BOOKER on the team’s priorities: “We’re just focused on trying to get as many wins as we can. I’m not really focused on the crowd or anything like that. I’ve got a job to do and that is to come down here and win three games."
