Scott Mieszala chronicled the MLB's Opening Day in his weekly column. What is the single most exciting day on your sports calendar?
Stile T. Smith
The single most exciting day on my sports calendar doesn’t even come around every year, which is what makes it so special. There is nothing quite like game seven of the NBA Finals. By the time your get to a 7th game, both teams know each other like the back of their hand, and they are the two best teams in the NBA the majority of the time. I just hope we get to see a Lakers-Cavs game seven this year. That could be one of the greatest NBA Finals we have seen yet with the game’s best player, Kobe Bryant, going up against its second best player, LeBron James.

I’ll agree with Scott here, and say that opening day of baseball is the most exciting sports day of the year. When else in the season can all fans (besides Royals) come out and believe that their team actually has a chance. All the teams come out and play on the same day, with their aces starting and major players starting. It brings a single tear to my eye every year to watch my Cardinals take the field for the first time in six months and play the game I love so much. Man that sounds sappy, but that is the power of baseball; it can make a rugged sportswriter blush like a schoolgirl.

It has to be game five of the WNBA Finals. I just pray the Detroit Shock are there again this year with Bill Laimbeer tearing it up from the sideline.

While the first day of the regular season is excellent, I would argue that the first day of baseball’s postseason is even better. After a long and arduous season of work, eight teams are made equal to each other. During this time of year, heroes shine brighter, crowds get louder and walk-off home runs seem to travel farther. The thing with the postseason is that often time heroes will step up that the common man hasn’t heard of. The first day of the postseason is the prelude to that. Ultimately, the first game of the season will probably factor very little into a team’s outcome. I mean, the Pirates won on opening day. The postseason though? Every win, every loss means something. It all starts on day one.
