Do Make Say Think
“Other Truths”
Release Date: Oct. 20, 2009
Record Label: Constellation
Rating: C+
Do Make Say Think has been living in Broken Social Scene’s shadow for the last seven years.
However, anybody who is a fan of instrumental rock knows the band’s legacy and gets a pang of excitement for the release of the band’s latest album, “Other Truths.”
Structurally, the album is a step in a new direction for the band, as there are only four tracks and each one is about 10 minutes long. The tracks are appropriately named “Do,” “Make,” “Say” and “Think.”
Each track is properly named to suit its style. Collectively, the songs break down the process of turning an idea into action. The track “Do” is a busy one, full of the classic horns and percussions the band frequently uses. The track “Make” is toned down and scurrying, representing the construction of an idea.
The track “Say” is similar to “Do,” but it is less put together and sprawling. Finally, the track “Think” is very quiet and shows how such a complicated idea can start so simple.
While the concept of the album is unique and inventive, the music is hard to follow. Similar to Menomena’s album “Under An Hour” which featured three long tracks, the album is impressive but it does not have the emotional punch expected from the band.
While it takes a disciplined ear to absorb the album, anybody can appreciate the mix of guitar riffs and horns. The band has mastered its sound and shows growth with each album. “Other Truths” may not be for everyone, but any Do Make Say Think fan should own it.
