True Realm, a live action role-playing game that brings the time of Dungeons and Dragons to life, was played in Carbondale. What era of time would make the best live action role-playing game?

The 1980s would be the best era for role play. People could compete for biggest hair, most ‘80s-riffic outfit and best spastastic dance. Players could form their own bands and battle to become one of the top one-hit wonders (Vh1 special last week, 100 top one-hit wonders of the ‘80s. There were seriously that many.) New ultra hip catch phrases and boxy blazers are a must.

I would choose the challenging role of an AIG executive lobbying for bailout after bailout, all the while cruising the world searching for the perfect tan in the difficult age of 2009. I would compete against other executives in these tasks and escape the dastardly reach of federal regulations. It would clearly require a cape.

Maybe this is just coming from my years spent crafting the perfect ratio of oxen, blankets, and bullets in Oregon Trail on that trusty old fossil, Apple II, but I think it would be awesome to hop a wagon train away from my Little House on the Prairie. I here we’re pretty close to the Gateway to the West. In this role-playing game, the “fun” obstacles are learning to trade, fording the river, and mourning the loss of little Davey when he dies of consumption, while the more cerebral tasks include not acquiring small pox and shooting at the ever-coveted buffalo (they’re worth, like, 100 lbs. of meat or something). So far, I’ve gathered you need six oxen and a whole lotta bullets.

Hmmm. Instead of time period, I would definitely say Christmas season. Dozens of bearded, fat-bellied men running around, fighting until the death with their weapon of choice—candycanes. And it could be fun for all ages; children could compete for head elf, and even get their pets involved, tying antlers on the heads of their dogs and having them head butt for the reign of Rudolph.
