What is the best album art?

The best album art of all time comes from Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass’s 1965 release Whipped Cream & Other Delights. Who would have thought a wholesome ‘60s brass band would have produced the sexiest album cover of all time. The album cover shows a 3-month pregnant Dolores Erickson wearing chiffon and whipped cream. This wholesome band’s album has instilled unwholesome thoughts in the minds of adolescents for over 40 years, and that is remarkable.

The first cover that comes to mind is The Clash's "London Calling". They took a classic Elvis cover and gave it a shot of youthful angst.

Since I first saw it at the ripe age of 10, I have been enamored with Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti album cover. Zeppelin is up with the Rolling Stones and The Who in terms of classic album art, but its depiction of random historical figures and pictures peering out of apartment windows always caught my eye.

I’ve always admired Maynard Keenan for his artwork, but Tool isn’t going to be on top for me. The Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” is fantastic, and there are fun pullouts inside, too, like paper stripes to pin on your coat and a picture of the Sarge. Led Zeppelin has great covers. “Houses of the Holy” is one of my favorites. Of Montreal put a lot into their artwork. I’ve got a scary horse picture from them that hasn’t quite found a home on my walls yet. (It’s scary.) So who comes out the winner? I’d say it’s a draw, but for the sake of decisions, The Beatles, “The White Album.”
