Jim Kanak said students pulled fire alarms, smoked in the hallways and drank alcohol in Schneider Hall when he lived there in 2001. Years later, a security audit requested by University Housing Director Julie Payne Kirchmeier last year identified a need for more staff members in Mae Smith, Neely and Schneider Halls. In Fall 2008 University Housing will double the number of RAs in those halls.…

Administrators have pulled a proposed increase in the campus recreation fee off the table, leaving the university scheduled to lose three outdoor fields, six tennis courts and possibly a cricket pitch because of Saluki Way. Current plans for the first phase of Saluki Way, which calls for the construction of a new football stadium, would cause the university to lose six of 12 tennis courts, three of six playing fields and the cricket pitch.…

Bigger paychecks mean bad news for students counting on federal work-study wages this summer. When minimum wage in Illinois went from $6.50 to $7.50 in July 2007, the state government may have put low-income students in financial checkmate. Billie Jo Hamilton, director of the Financial Aid Office, said the wage increase caused the university to expend their federal work-study budget in the fall and spring, leaving none for the summer 2008. Without work-study funds, the university pays student workers' wages. Those wages are included in students' estimated family contribution for financial aid purposes, thus decreasing the amount of financial aid for which the student is eligible.…
