SIU President Glenn Poshard said Friday an SIUC department would review his doctoral dissertation to determine if he plagiarized portions of the 1984 document.

In a press conference at the Stone Center, Poshard said the Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education would review the dissertation and the sources from which he is accused of lifting. The department would determine if he intentionally plagiarized from other sources.

Their conclusions would likely be referred to the SIU Board of Trustees, who would decide what action to take, Poshard said.

"I will make whatever changes are recommended by the department and, by doing so, I hope to fulfill the highest expectations you have of me as your president," Poshard said.

Poshard said he never considered submitting his dissertation to a committee outside the university for review.

"This issue is about me being a student here 24 years ago in this department," he said.

Poshard said he canceled the meetings he set with faculty and staff for Friday to discuss the accusations. He said he didn't want to be accused of meeting with people to manipulate the review process.
